A little about me...

Welcome to Birch Grove Psychology!

My name is Vanessa Kmiech, and I am the owner of Birch Grove Psychology, a private practice located in Red Deer, Alberta. I am a Registered Psychologist with the College of Alberta Psychologists, offering compassionate, trauma-informed care to adults, teens, and families. I work alongside my co-therapist, Rue, a certified therapy dog whose calm presence helps create a welcoming, grounded space.

I bring over 20 years of experience working with vulnerable communities, and I approach therapy with deep respect for the courage it takes to seek support. My areas of experience include first responders, veterans, complex trauma, medical challenges, exploitation, domestic violence, and religious trauma. My work is grounded in evidence-based therapies, including EMDR, CBT, and DBT, and supported by an ongoing commitment to professional learning.

Above all, I prioritize creating a space where clients feel safe, respected, and heard. I believe you are the expert in your own life, and my role is to walk alongside you on your path toward healing.

Meet Rue

Rue is a 3-year-old Newfoundland and a certified therapy dog with a giant heart to match her giant paws. Her calm, gentle nature brings comfort to the therapy space, and her quiet sense of humour brings joy in the midst of the emotional challenges of therapy.

Rue loves being part of sessions, especially if they include pets, belly rubs, or the occasional treat.

When she’s off duty, Rue can usually be found enjoying pup cups, playing with her brother, short walks (emphasis on short), and anything involving water, true to her Newfoundland roots.

Rue is happy to join sessions when clients find her presence supportive. If you prefer a dog-free session, that is always respected, just let us know what feels most comfortable for you.
